Why Should I Recycle?

I’ve heard a ton of reasons to recycle, but I’m still not convinced. Why do YOU think I should recycle?

Tell Tommy why he should recycle:

What other people have said

Where do I get one of those Tee shirts?
Ayoub , Buffalo, NY

You should recycle because if you don't you will be stereotyped and demeaned as a mean, uncaring, selfish, redneck, idiot, republican, earth destroyer (who hates babies). You will also get a false sense of importance and pride. Don't let anyone (especially the government) make you feel guilty so you'll do what they want.

Cause there are a shit ton of people in this city and they all want as much STUFF as everyone in the US, which means not one but two refrigerators, a few tvs, oh, and of course, a bunch of cars. There isn't enough STUFF to go around unfortunately. So, lets reuse&recycle yeah? :)

Recycling & Composting has cut our trash by about 75%!!!!

John, Owensboro

I think you should recycle so that when you drive on highways and smell something really stinky you will know that you have just passed a landfill for that area. The smell won't be so strong and linger as long if you recycle and everything doesn't end up in the landfill.
Valerie Bryant, Atlanta

Recycling is the right thing to do, and it will increase your Good Karma! Everyone can use more Good Karma, can't they? So get goin', Tommy!
Kathy Elsee, LaGrange,GA

I first heard about Tommy when I was at a "RECYCLE MEETING!" One thing ,okay maybe 3 ,but #1.Your the dumbest guy I have ever heard of,because we can not live on another PLANET and here's why no oxegyn,no gravity,no food,no water. #2.You and your friends can try an expierament to see if we can live on another planet but it's not going to work because it will last a year but your only going to live 2 hours. #3. You have gotta recycle otherwise we are all going to die.
Kaylee Key, Lagrange,GA

I got permission from my teacher to go on here. TOMMY OS AN IDIOT! That's all. :)
Nunya Beeswax, LaGrange,GA

Tommy, you should recycle because the resources on this planet are finite. We cannot create plastic or paper or glass or aluminum. We must mine and harvest materials from the earth and then use them to create those products. Eventually, (maybe not in your lifetime but perhaps your children or grandchildren's) we will run out of those resources and no longer have the means to make the materials we need. Or, those resources will be so scarce it will not be financially feasible to still collect those resources. Or, we would have to put our money into other country's economies in order to harvest their resources. IF we had just recycled this whole time, and used the materials we have already used to make new products here in our own country employing our own people rather than harvesting new resources, then we would not have the problem of vanishing resources and pouring money out of our economy. Even if you're not an environmentalist, recycling makes fiscal sense.
Teresa, San Diego

well I've heard it's to save the trees and keep the air clean for our kids. I think it's the only thing that makes sense. You can't just keep burning stuff forever - you can just about "re-use" anything these days.
Eenah, Kennesaw

Tommy, habits are hard to change, I understand! Start small, baby steps... One little change every month. First one should be the easiest for YOU, maybe eliminating those water bottles? Or recycling your newspaper? Find something. But do it, stick with it, make an effort. Pretty soon, it will be natural, and you will think green! Good luck!
Go Green!, Columbus, GA

Even better than recycling (which you need to do, and re-use, too) is not making garbage in the first place! Don't buy stuff that comes in a lot of packaging. Eat simply. Cook stuff from scratch (what a concept!) Try the 10in10Diet. Lynn http://www.10in10diet.com/ Diet for a small footprint, and a small grocery bill.
Lynn, Sharbot LAke

Tommy, come guy! Move to another planet - get real. Then what? Destroy it also. Could I suggest you get counseling and talk to someone who believe in making this world a better place for future generations. Why set examples for our children to leave a path of destruction everywhere they go. Explain this and you might get more followers - NOT!
Ron, Fort Stewart

All you people who listen to Sean Hannity and think that the world is cooling are fools. Why don't you go to college and get an education? Then you can claim to know things. The Earth is warming and you are destroying it, but because money is all Republicans think about, they come up with some BS reason to not spend it to save the environment.

If everyone says to do something, but it's a struggle to find convincing facts, then don't do it. Do not recycle. Think for yourself.

I forgot I do recycle newspaper. I use them to start my fires in the winter. See it helps keep you warm. Burn your garbage and save the planet from global cooling.
Mathew, Monroe, Ga

Brianna, somethings cost more money to recycle than it costs to produce new material. This does not save money. How much energy is expended when an alluminum plant melts down cans? Brianna think about how much energy that takes. Let them make a new can. I don't want to drink out of a can that has been used by someone else.
Mathew, Monroe,GA

Way to go Tommy. I do not recycle either. This green movement is nonsense. The Earth has been cooling for the past 10 years. The sun has more to do with the heating or cooling of the planet than carbon emmissions. The Earth is cooling use as much fossil fuels as possible. It was 9 degrees in Atlanta GA last year. Get over it.
Mathew, Monroe,GA

come on tommy dont be lazy!!!
Shelly , Akron

I think you should recycle to keep the world clean and to save money everywhere.
Brianna, Savannah

The EPA states "Recycling protects and expands U.S. manufacturing jobs and increases U.S. competitiveness.". That could help you land a job!!
Nancy Martin, Suwanee, GA

Because my job depends on your recyclables and so do 100 other people in Athens alone. Just do it!
Suki Janssen, Athens, GA

well why not. Will it kill you to toss your soda bottle into a recycling bin as you walk down the side walk...Or to use misprinted paper as scratch paper? Recycling doesn't have to be done traditionally if all your doing is avoiding the band wagon... Every little thing helps......... PS: Nice billboard!
The Friend Nobody Likes, Pike, Ga

What would make you recycle? Incentives? Fines? Anything? What if it was as convenient as recycling?
RE3.org, Raleigh NC

Tommy Tommy Tommy. Wake up my man! Instead of looking for another planet for us to live on you should be focusing your energy on securing a job in the recycling industry - that way you can afford that sweet jet ski that you're after. Recycling is great for the economy not just the environment. But don't take my word for it, check out the epa website and read all about the economic benefits of recycling.
Anne R., Savannah

DUDE! You've GOT 2 recycle! I'm 11 and my whole reach class @ school recycles. I think you NEED to pay a visit 2 Mrs.King and DR.Thomas @ Alex II on College ST,MaconGA. Global Warming will melt the ice caps and the world wont have any penguins or polar bears or stuff like that! Green house gases will destroy the ozone layer. The ozone layer of the earth gives us oxygen. Oxygen gives us life! DO U WANNA LIVE?I DO! Do u know where your trash goes? To a land fill.If u throw away a water bottle ur practically ruining the earth right there!Do u know how long it takes 4 those to degrate? A LOPNG TIME TOMMY! so just recycle! LIVE UR LIFE TO THE FULLEST! RECYCLE! (MRS.King and Dr.Thomas are at Alexander II Math Science Magnet School On College Street Macon,GA right across the streeet from Mercer and Centenary. If u want me, I'm at Centenary every Sunday for church.) (Centenary United Methodist U can also find lots of mercer students ther 2!)
clara-ellen, macon

Even in a county as small as Pike, we have a place where we can take items to be recycled. Once you start doing it you find all kinds of things to recycle and it makes you feel good. Time for one trip every Saturday morning is all it takes. The amount that actually goes to the dump has been substantially decreased.
Sandra, Zebulon

Dude, what if all the trash you generated in your life, suddenly showed up at your front door and stared you in the face, saying, "I'm Baaack! Now What're Ya Gonna Do?" Basically just because you threw it away, doesn't mean it went away. In a landfill, stuff doesn't break down for a looong time. The only true "away" is RECYCLED into stuff you want to have around. Which is a lot better than sitting here stewing in our own waste, and that's where we'll all be if we don't recycle everything we can. Get with it, dude, before you lose the chance.
Dave, The other Columbus, OH

Seriously people, get a grip! (oh and by the way Tommy I agree with you). If you're gonna try and convince someone to recycle, don't just come in and call them an idiot! (or moron, or say they should become extinct, etc.) I personally would never become convinced just by people ranting and raving at me. If you're going to try to get someone to recycle, use logic, give the facts, and show the advantages (if there are any). In other words, show them why they need to recycle, instead of putting a gun to their head and calling them names.
Sam, Acworth

Tommy, I'm not sure there's much hope for you...you look like you think, and you look like a moron. I have a feeling you will be chosen for natural selection....for extinction.
Jason, Dallas

why would you? BECAUSE IF YOU DONT YOU WILL FILL UP OUR LAND FILLS WITH YOUR CRAP CAUSING GREENHOUSE GAS INTO THE AIR DESTROYING THE OZONE LAYER. No ozone no oxygen no oxygen no life, and whale it will take a while for this to happen the rays of the sun get stronger and stronger. UV rays harsher and harsher. So if you get sun cancer you have noone to blame but you and your trash :).
da, Atl

Hey, Tommy... It'll save room in your garbage for other stuff, and eventually you may be recycling that, too! Wouldn't it be pretty cool to have NO garbage???
Sharon, Rockmart

ManBearPig is looming at your door...if you don't recycle, he will get you. EXCELSIOR!!!!
Patrick, Atlanta

Tommy, It is called Mother Earth for a reason….as any good mother would never disregard her child we should not disregard or disrespect our Mother Earth. Mother Earth has been good to us all. We should do everything possible to help…I adopted a mile in memory of my Beagle called “Martin’s Mile” in the county where I live…to help keep Mother Earth clean. It’s frustrating to say the least to pick up after others “that…don’t recycle” and think that the side of the road is the best place to discard their trash. I wish people that don’t recycle would spend time picking up cigarette butts on the side of the road…I believe that they would think twice before tossing something out. We should also bring back the deposit on bottles and cans….this would keep the recycle process working… My thoughts JT Marietta, Georgia…from the great county of Cobb….
John Townsend, Marietta, GA

When used and properly recycled, CFLs are a great choice. The amount of mercury in CFLs is small and can be recycled through programs like the CFL recycling drop-off program at all Home Depot stores and many cities household hazardous waste collection programs (check with your city). Plus, the use of CFLs reduces the demand for electricty, which in turn, reduces mercury and greenhouse gas emissions from power plants.
Shelly, Chicago

Get with the program Dude
Michael, New York

I'm sorry but i really do need to put in my two cents. Why should anyone take recycling so hardcore when the government and major big retail companies are not taking the initiative and leaving it up to the consumer to do MOST if not ALL of the recycling. For instance we want to conserve electricity and use CFL's(the special flouresence bulbs) while theyre great and everything they contain Mercury-NOT good for landfills. Maybe they need to re-think this? What about taking biodegradeable products onto a large scale so products get to the consumer that are biodegradeable? WHATS TAKING SO LONG? Come on! There is a market out there for all this and its all on earth911.org ! read all about it! There are so many other reasons and I could write a book about it! Tom you look great! Try to recycle..WHEN you can though. Dont stress it! :) Keep strong
TriskelionAZ, Tucson Arizona USA!

Tommy, I would like to go to another planet, too, but not with you. People like you have made our planet like it is now, polluted and with the resources used up. Now, if you would recycle, perhaps the cost savings in resource recovery would fund more of our NASA budget, and someday we can go out in space...
Alison, Portland, Maine

Hey Tommy, let's see if you have the MOXIE to show up at Enviro Expo USA on America Recycles Day. If you think you are flat now...wait till all our recyclers get through with you on November 15.
Enviro Expo USA, Atlanta

You inability to recycle only emphisizes your lazyness and ignorance.
Chuck, Temple, GA

Tommy, just think of how many more beer bottles you can make by recycling your beer bottles. It is worth the effort, man!
Lindsay, Midway

Recycling is the one simple thing all of us can do to make a difference for our environment. Get with it, Tommy!
Karen, Hinesville

Tommy, I hate to tell you this but if you are not recycling, you must already be on another planet...
Dave, Hinesville

You gotta be kidding! Not recycling is sooo 1970's...
Sara, Midway

Recycling creates thousands of quality jobs and 7 to 15 times the economic value of landfilling waste
Tom, Montreal

You're too hot not to!

Tommy-have you seen the solar system?? Not so many great options beyond Earth!
Glo, Atlanta

Tommy should recycle because we can't keep making excuses about why we don't recycle. It's easy to do and helping the Earth gives you a warm fuzzy feeling!
